Will I need support for 10GBASE-T?

It is unlikely that you need 10 Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop now, but it may be relevant in your data centre or backbone. The choice of media for your horizontal cabling may differ from that for your data centre or backbone, but will be influenced by your need to support 10GBASE-T.

Where deployment of 10 Gigabit Ethernet is limited to the backbone, it may be appropriate to use fibre optic cabling to support 10GBASE-SR or 10GBASE-LR, rather than 10GBASE-T over copper. Similarly, for local inter-switch connections, 10GBASE-CX4 cabling may be appropriate.

The greater the anticipated life of the cabling systems, the greater the likelihood that 10GBASE-T support will be required.
