Power over Ethernet (PoE)

Freedom from mains power

Using the same cabling infrastructure to deliver both power and communications to a device can save money and enhance flexibility.

PoE components

Power in the form of 48 V dc at up to 350 mA is supplied either by a PoE capable Ethernet switch or a midspan injector, typically located together with a standard ethernet switch as shown.

The schematic shows a variety of typical PoE enabled devices:

PoE laptops?

Current laptops typically require more power than can be delivered by PoE means at this time. This is set to change as less power hungry components are developed for laptops and additional power is delivered by PoEPlus.
