Copper Cabling

Generic cabling

There are a range of transmission performance specifications that horizontal and backbone copper cabling can be designed, specified and installed to meet, including:

  • Category 5e/ Class D
  • Category 6/ Class E
  • Category 6A/ Class EA
  • Class F

System selection

When choosing the type of copper cabling to install, one of the key factors is the protocol(s) to be supported over the life of system. Gigabit Ethernet will operate over Category 5e UTP, with Category 6 providing additional headroom. For 10 Gigabit Ethernet over copper, Category 6A will support 100 m channels, with Category 6 UTP providing more limited support.

In the case of Gigabit Ethernet, unshielded media is typical. For 10 Gigabit Ethernet, there may be advantages in using shielded media – reducing the detrimental effects of alien crosstalk.

Application specific cabling

As well as generic premises cabling, copper media may be used for a wide range of application specific communication, including:

  • 10GBASE-CX 10 Gigabit Ethernet
  • Analogue/digital voice
  • RG-59 Coaxial for CCTV
  • VGA, DVI-I/D and HDMI
  • Audio distribution and control
